    Beyond doubt, the Apparel industry makes a huge contribution to Sri Lanka’s total export earnings. For the calendar year 2015 alone, Apparel export revenue amounted to a whopping US $4.9 billion. In the light of this fact, the Apparel export sector’s bold ambition to earn US $8 billion as apparel export revenue by 2020 is fairly realistic and achievable. Also, directly employing 400.000 to 600,000 people, the sector consists of some of the country’s largest employers.

    In an interview with Lanka Monthly Digest (LMD), Sri Lanka’s premier business magazine, Mr. Aroon Hirdaramani, a Director of the Hirdaramani Group, one of the country’s apparel giants observes that “…it is essential that we have a strong economic framework in place, to support the industry’s continued growth and competitiveness….”

    Colombo hosts 2nd edition of Intex South Asia

    Intex South Asia, the only international sourcing fair in South Asia which showcases the best in yarns, fabrics (apparel and denim) and clothing accessories, is presenting a grand display at the Exhibition and Convention Centre (SLECC) in Colombo from 16-18 November.

    It is the second edition of Intex South Asia and in anticipation of the Sri Lankan apparel industry regaining GSP+ concessions, this year’s exhibition was successful in bringing more than 150 exhibitors from Italy, Japan, South Africa, Korea, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India to Sri Lanka.

    EU, UN launch Rs. 1 billion project to boost SL trade

    The Sri Lankan Government has joined forces with the European Union in embarking on a four-year, 8 million Euro (Rs. 1.3 billion) project, geared towards increasing Sri Lanka’s trade competitiveness in regional and European markets.

    The project will be implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC) and United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in collaboration with the Sri Lankan Department of Commerce.

    Meanwhile, a steering committee co-chaired by the Ministry of Policy Planning and Economic Affairs and the Delegation of the European Union will provide overall direction to the project. Competent national level agencies and apex business entities will also support work-plan development and implementation of activities.

    A delegation from China led by Sui Zhong Cheng, Vice Governor of Jilin Province consisting of 33 officials and entrepreneurs from that province visited the BOI with the purpose of exploring avenues for trade and investment.

    Sri Lanka seafood, apparel exports up in July

    Sri Lanka's seafood exports to the European Union picked up 19.9 percent in July 2016 from a year earlier, following the lifting of a ban, and apparel exports rose 3 percent, but lower commodity prices have hit petroleum and tea.  

    Exports fell 4.4 percent to $891.2 million in July 2016 from a year earlier and imports fell 6.6 percent to $1,432 million dollars, shrinking the trade balance 10 percent to $541 million, official data showed.

    Time to make trade happen

    Thumbs up for Sri Lanka! International Trade Centre (ITC) Executive Director Arancha González believes its crunch time for the country.

    A robust trade agenda is essential for Sri Lanka to leapfrog competitors, believes International Trade Centre (ITC) Executive Director Arancha González, who is in Colombo to attend the World Export Development Forum (WEDF) sessions today that will also focus on SMEs and foster direct engagement between businesses.     

    ITC is the joint agency of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and the World Trade Organization. Gonzalez is in Colombo this week to meet with key Government officials and attend the sessions of the WEDF on Wednesday and Thursday. The forum has been billed as one of the largest trade promotions forums to date with hundreds of local and foreign companies participating in nearly 3,000 “speed dating” sessions during the next two days.

    Jeevani Siriwardena has been appointed the new Director General of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB).

    She joined EDB as a Management Trainee in 1984. She counts over 20 years of experience at EDB in Product Management and over 10 years in the Market Development Divisions of EDB.

    She handled the product and market development activities of the apparel export sector during its early growth phase and also led the development activities of the other industrial and agricultural product sectors.

    Siriwardena has led several overseas marketing missions involving the private sector while also being a part of a number of presidential business delegations. She has extensive foreign market exposure, including in countries such as the US, Europe, South Africa, Japan, China and India. She also served as the Officer in Charge of the EDB-initiated Sri Lanka Trade Centre in Chennai for 15 months.

    For a span of two years she worked as a visiting lecturer at the University of Colombo, prior to joining EDB.

    She obtained a Bachelor of Commerce Special Degree (second class) in 1982 and a Master’s in Business Studies (Merit) from the University of Colombo. She is also an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK.

    Siriwardena had her primary education in Matara where her father served as the AGA and then entered University from Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo where she obtained colours for tennis and won the national junior and juvenile silver medal for badminton.

    At Colombo University she got colours for tennis, badminton and table tennis and captained the men’s and women’s tennis team of the University of Colombo in 1982, winning the Inter-University Challenge Trophy.

    “This is one of the biggest events the new Government has undertaken,” Minister Samarawickrama stated, “And we are well on track to making it an exceptional global conference.” As of the date of this meeting, the conference had 361 registered foreign participants, and 282 registered local participants, a number that is rapidly growing, with more registrations expected within the one-month countdown for the event.
