Interesting places to visit in Sri LankaSigiriya frescos is located 169 km. from Colombo. The rock fortress was built by King Kasyapa in the 5 th century AD and was a royal cidal for more than 18 years. In a sheltered pocket approached by a spiral stairway are the famous frescos . Sigirya is declared by UNESCO as the 8 th wonders of the worl . Dambulla is a vast isolated rock mass like Sigiriya. It was here that King Walagamba took refuge in the 1 st century BC. He later turned the caves into a rock temple. Some of the frescos are over 2000 years old and there is a colossal figure of the recumbent Buddha caved out of the rock. Other Places of interest Kandy city is regarded as the tourist paradise. It contains so many places of interest to watch ranging from the religious to the natural. One of the chief objects of interests in Kandy is the Dalada Maligawa or Temple of the Sacred Tooth. It was a capital of the last Sinhala Kingdom. It is known for its Perehera where colorfully dressed elephants, drummers and dancers parade the city in the month of August. Botanical Gardens at Peredeniya is a breathtaking spectacle of color and beauty Nuwera Eliya is called little England. Nuwera Eliya is 6230 feet above sea level. One of the biggest attractions in Nuwera Eliya is the fine 18 hole golf court. Haggala Botanical Gardens just only 6 miles away from Nuwera Eliya is a fascinating place to visit. Throughout the surrounding country there are beautiful waterfalls cascading thousands of feet down mountain sides. Some of them are Devon, St. Clair, Aberdeen named by nostangalic English planters. Very close to Nuwera Eliya is Horton Plains where nature lovers will love the wide patina grass where several wild animals and species roam. Anuradhapura Sri Lanka's first capital founded in the 5 th centaury BC is situated 206 km from Colombo. Places of attractions ,are the Sacred Bo Tree, Abhayagiri Dagaba, Ruwanvelisaya etc. Eleven km east of Anuradhapura is Mihintale regarded as the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Historical places to watch are Pothgulwehera, Lankathilaka, and Lankathilaka etc. Animal Sanctuaries Yahala National Park - situated 300 km from Colombo Yala is approximately 1,259 sq.km in extent and is located in the southeastern cover of the island . Beaches in the Southern part of Sri Lanka Sri Lanka's beaches are the most picturesque in the world with deep blue waters coral reefs with many types of fish. You will see when you visit Western coastlines of the beautiful country. Hikkaduwa 99 k.m. this is the place for under water delights where there is marine sanctuary abundant with rare corals and beautiful shoals of fish. These can be explored either by snorkeling or taking a ride in a glass bottom boat. Unawattane 4 km of Galle ( 120 KM from Colombo a beautiful stretch of beach in the South is safe for bathing. East cost beaches- Nilaweli 16 km from Trincomalee and Kalkudai 32 km are the beautiful beaches to visit. |
