Uva
Paranagama is located in the Badulla District,
160 km away from the commercial capital
Colombo, Sri Lanka. Badulla district is
renowned for supplying the best fresh produc
such as Tomatoes, Beans, Cabbage, Capsicum,
Bringal and Potatoes for both local and
overseas markets.
The
Uva-Paranagama Export Production Village
(People’s) Co. Ltd (UPEPV) was established
in 2002 under the guidance of Sri Lanka
Export Development Board and Sri Lanka Fruits
and Vegetable Producers, Processors and
Exporters Association. At present, the UPEPV
has a membership of 600 farmers, selected
from the 62 Grama Niladari Divisions in
the Uva-Paranagama electorate. These farmers
were selected based on their experience
in cultivating vegetables in the open field.
Out
of this 600 farmers 100 farmers have already
set-up poly tunnels to cultivate Tomatoes
(Hybrid varieties), Bell Pepper and Brinjals
(Black Beauty variety) in the highly protected
environment. At present these varieties
are being cultivating in 100 Poly Tunnels.
This comprise of 33 poly tunnels for Tomatoes,
another 33 for Bell Pepper and rest for
Brinjals. The total out put of these 100
tunnels are being purchased by exporters
to meet their export requirements. The weekly
capacity of these varieties are as follows.
Tomatoes
7000 Kg
Capcicum 2000 Kg
Brinjals 4000 Kg
Bell Pepper 1100 Kg
Since,
the UPEPV has entered into a buy back agreement
with the members of the Sri Lanka Fruits
and Vegetable Producers, Processors and
Exporters Association, the farmers output
is guaranteed and the price is secured leading
to an average income on a long term basis.
