Total Bangladesh exports in 1995 amounted to US$ 3.7 billion. The EU and the USA are the two main export markets for Bangladesh: 42% of Bangladesh’s total export in 1993/94 went to the EU, while 33% went to the USA. Germany and UK are the largest importers of Bangladeshi goods within the EU, while France, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands follow in descending order. Ready-made garments, which is Bangladesh’s major export product, accounted for 60% of total exports in 1993/94. Other important exports include frozen leather and leather products (7%).

Bangladeshi exports mainly go to Western Europe and the USA, whereas imports arrive to a large extent from Asia. Thus, only 11% of Bangladesh’s total export in 1993/94 came from the EU, while 5% came from the USA, giving Bangladesh large trade surpluses. Imports under loans and grants consist of bilateral and multilateral aid in the form of food, projects and other activities. If only goods imported under cash and barter etc. are considered, then India is the largest supplier to Bangladesh, accounting for 15% of the supplies, followed by Hong Kong, South Korea and China.

The Bangladesh Bank follows a semi-flexible policy of re-evaluating the currency on the basis of a weighted basket of economic indicators. But the government declared recently that it intends to make the Taka fully Trade Organization on 1 January 1995 as a founding member and enjoys full preferential Trade Agreement (SAPTA), formed under the regional partnership South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). But this cannot have an effect on the Bangladeshi import regime.
