Based on the
data and facts of this report, it could be concluded that Switzerland
is a highly sophisticated and quality conscious market. Switzerland
has a reputation as being an exporter of high quality, high tech
products and they expect the same standards from their suppliers.
One of the strategies that Sri Lanka could adopt is to find and
cater to market niches. The large number of tourists coming from
various cultures, tastes and preferences constantly influences the
Swiss market. Thus it is very important to be in touch with the
market at all times. As Switzerland is the highest per capita income
earner in the world, the purchasing power of the consumer is high.
However, it should be kept in mind that accepted standards should
be met when exporting products to this country. Although this is
not a new market, our exports to Switzerland have not increased
considerably. This is due to the fact that we have not exploited
the Swiss market fully.
It is noted that the Swiss market has a unique quality which the
neighbouring markets do not display i.e. the population of Swiss
nationals is less than the tourist population at a given time during
a year, thus creating a unique market. These two segments therefore
create the opportunities in the market. The market segment which
represent the Swiss nationals demands high quality products and
also is prepared to pay a good price per unit, where as tourist
market demands a variety of products which will satisfy their "short
term needs". This unique situation in the Swiss market gives
an opportunity to a wide range of products to penetrate into this
market.
As Swiss consumers are turning towards using natural products, there
is a potential to promote Sri Lanka’s coir based products
especially brushes and brooms. The only product being exported at
present in this category is mattress fibre, but wooden products
are another sector to be considered. Herbal teas, sun dried fruits,
bio-foods, handloom, handicrafts, ceramic items are some other products
that could be promoted in this market.
EDB should work closely with institutions such as OSEC, the Swiss
office for Trade Promotion. It is a national organisation with world
wide contacts and activities and offers a full range of services
to companies doing business in the world market whether, Swiss or
foreign.
