Introduction
Wooden Furniture industry is one of the main sub industrial sectors
which falls within the structure of wood industry in Sri Lanka. The
wood industry in Sri Lanka consists ofsaw milling, construction, wooden
toys parquet, wood based panel products etc. In Sri Lanka wooden furniture
industry is one of the oldest industries employing a large number
of people in both urban and rural areas.
It is estimated that there are over 9000 furniture and other wood
working industrial plants in the country scattered in and around Colombo
and estimated employment is approx.28,000. At present Sri Lanka wooden
furniture industry is capable of catering not only to the domestic
market but also to the overseas markets.
Supply Base
Sri Lanka wood furniture industry depends heavily on rubber
wood. Treated rubberwood has become a more important source of raw
material for the wooden furniture industry. There is a heavy demand
from international market for furniture made using FSC certified timber.
Arrangements are underway to obtain relevant certification,. Local
companies could also import timber for manufacturing purpose according
to buyer requirements. Sri Lanka uses other kind of timber species
too such as teak, mahogany for the furniture manufacturing industry
. They are mostly from home gardens and well managed forests. |

Range
of Products
The wooden furniture manufactured in Sri Lanka includes household
furniture (bedroom & living room, kitchen furniture, garden furniture).
Office furniture (computer tables, office tables etc) commercial and
institutional furniture (furniture for hotels and schools, hospitals
etc). Furniture in knockdown form/built in furniture is also exported
according to buyer specifications. Sri Lanka is competent in producing
such items to the high end of the market.
Quality
Sri Lanka furniture products are capable of meeting the international
quality standards to a greater extent. Work in progress to meet FSC
requirements.
