  Present Industry Position   Exports & Major Markets
  Plastic processing which commenced around a decade after independence is now over 45 years old. Currently there are 232 Companies in Sri Lanka engaged in plastics processing for both domestic & international market . A total sum of Rs. 11.5 billion has been invested in the industry. Almost 50% of this has come through Foreign Direct Investments The industry processes many commodity plastics and engineering plastics using modern technologies.

The capacity of our local processing industry is presently nearly 120,000 MT per annum with an annual average growth rate of around 10%.

Breakdown of Investment in Plastic Industries
Less than Rs. 10 million - 63 Companies (46%)
Rs. 10 mn-100 mn - 58 Companies (42%)
Over Rs. 100 million - 15 Companies (11%)
Many medium & large scale plastics industries have developed overseas markets for the following products
Polyethylene bags, (door knob bags, shirt bags and food wrap bags etc.)
Packaging products to exporting industries such as garments, food processing and jewellery exports.

  The most significant plastic product exported continues to be polyethylene bags (P/E) under the HS 39 category, which amounted to approx. Rs 1.4 billion in year 2000, accounting for 45% of plastics exports. Other plastics items which were supplied to be garment industries accounted for Rs. 675 million. Figurines & other plastic items netted Rs. 442 million. These three product categories alone account for just over 80% of plastic exports.

The USA continues to be the major buyer purchasing Rs. 1,172 million worth products in these three categories. Of the total plastics products exported in the year 2003 the USA purchased Rs. 1548 million while India trailed a second at Rs. 451 million.
