LANKA CANNERIES LTD
Lanka Canneries Limited is the successors to the Marketing Department which was established by a British Civil Servant Mr.R.H.Basset in the 1930's. With the advent of the 2nd World War many troops were stationed in Sri Lanka, and then known as Ceylon. With the shortage due to the war it was necessary for the Marketing Department to Supply food to the troops stationed here. Mr.Basset took immediate steps to produce Jam from local fruits for the consumption of the troops and the fruit processing factory was built in Narahenpita, Colombo. After the 2nd World War the Marketing Department progressively improved the fruit processing facilities at Narahenpita, Colombo by importing machinery from the UK, USA & Europe. All products were manufactured under stringent quality control under the brand name MD. The range of products grew from a variety of Jams to Sauces, Canned Fruits and Vegetables to Cordials, Pickles and Chutney etc. Due to the growing demand of MD brand products a second factory was built in 1976 in Attanagalla with the latest fruit processing machinery imported from Europe. With these two factories Lanka Canneries Limited was able to meet the growing demand for James, Sauces, cordials, Chutney & Pickles, Canned Fruit & Vegetables, Fruit Juices, Purees & Creams etc., in the country and began exporting these products in the 1980's.
