For over a decade, Sri Lanka had exported a range of organically certified products. The country is considered the pioneer in the Asian region, to introduce organically certified tea and cinnamon to the world market.
According to the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement (IFOAM), total land area under organic agriculture in Sri Lanka in the year 2014 was 19,517 hectares which was 0.75% of the total land area, which is a 27% increase from 15,379 hectares in 2006 which was 0.65% of the total land area under agricultural production.

Lanka Guardian Commodities was established in 1990 by a single founder, A.C.M. Mukhtar, who stands as the current chairman of the company. Mukhtar’s plan was to supply spices in wholesale to local exporters. Soon after, his three sons also joined the company as directors. Lanka Guardian Commodities was a small business in the beginning, and only started exporting in 2010. Initially, there were very few exports conducted. However, with time, the export processes grew, as the four directors of the company put in all their best efforts and hard work. Today, we stand with more than 20 years of experience in the field of tea and spices. We have been known as the largest exporter of sesame seeds in 2014, heavily exporting Sri Lankan products to many countries, especially Japan, Middle East, and India. The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) has initiated actions to establish the National Organic Control Unit (NOCU) as per the regulations published under the section 29 of the Export Development Act No. 40 of 1979 in the extraordinary gazette no. 1870/71 dated July 11, 2014. As per the regulations, all Organic Exporters, Importers, Traders, Producers, Processors, Certification bodies, Inspection bodies and Laboratories are hereby requested to register with the NOCU to ensure the credibility of Organic Agricultural Products traded within Sri Lanka and exported to the international market.
Organic regulations are formulated based on guidelines or basic standards provided by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) and Codex Alimentarius. Presently, there are eight international certification agencies operating in the country as external inspectors or/and certification bodies.
Organic agriculture is a sustainable form of agriculture, for both ecological and economic reasons. Sri Lanka has been at the forefront in organic agricultural exports ranging from spices, essential oils, and herbs to rubber. The industry is well equipped to supply the global market.
