Sri Lanka's Apex Organisation for Export Promotion
The 1st of August, 2023, marks the 44th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB). The EDB was established in 1979 with the objective of establishing a strong government-level institutional framework to develop and promote Sri Lanka’s exports in order to integrate with the global economy consequent to the adoption of liberal economic policies in 1977, and it has been at the vanguard in terms of promoting and developing exports in Sri Lanka for over four decades.
Sri Lanka’s merchandise exports increased by 16.6 % to US$ 989.7 Million in May 2023 compared to April 2023. However, it is a 5.59 % decrease when compared to May 2022.
The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) is pleased to announce that the 25th Presidential Export Awards (PEA) Ceremony will be held on Thursday, 23rd November 2023 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) under the patronage of the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) successfully organized the inaugural "EDB Open Day" program, aimed at providing guidance to innovative entrepreneurs and encourage their participation in the export sector. Held on 15th June at the EDB premises, the event garnered a tremendous response with over a thousand budding entrepreneurs from across the island in attendance. Notably, the program witnessed a significant participation of young individuals who were passionate in exploring opportunities in the export market.
The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) is excited to announce the upcoming "EDB Open Day" event - a one-day program – which will take place on Thursday, 15th June, 2023, from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm at the EDB, No 42, Nawam Mawatha, Colombo 02. Sri Lanka’s merchandise exports decreased by 16.15 % to US$ 814.1 Million in April 2023 compared to April 2022. Moreover, it is a 0.5 % decrease when compared to April 2021.
Sri Lanka’s merchandise exports decreased by 1.96 % to US$ 1,037.5 Million in March 2023 compared to March 2022. Moreover, it is a 5.14 % decrease when compared to March 2021. Less demand created for major products in major markets due to the current economic situation further continues.
United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce (AHK Sri Lanka) together with the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) organized an awareness program for Sri Lankan exporters in preparation for the forthcoming German Act on Corporate Due Diligence in Supply Chains that came into force in Germany from 1st January 2023. The initiative aimed to increase awareness regarding the new law in Germany, and outline the challenges and opportunities for Sri Lankan Export Industries.
Export Development Board of Sri Lanka (EDB) new Chairman Dr. Kingsley Bernard yesterday revealed plans to achieve $ 31.3 billion target by 2027 thereby heralding much-needed dollar earnings to overcome the prolonged foreign exchange dearth and stabilise the economy.

Sri Lanka’s merchandise exports decreased by 8.06 % to US$ 1,005.2 Million in February 2023 compared to February 2022 as per the data released by the Sri Lanka Customs. However, it is a 5.62% increase when compared to February 2021.

A delegation from Sri Lanka participated in the BIOFACH Trade Fair, the world’s largest annual organic food products trade show held from 14-17 February 2023 in Nuremberg, Germany. This annual trade fair held since 1990 attracts food industry professionals from across the world. This year, 2,765 exhibitors from 95 countries participated in the trade fair. The fair was also attended by 36,000 trade visitors from 135 countries. Germany is one of the largest organic food markets in the world and BIOFACH figures show that the organic sector recorded revenues of €15.3 billion for the German organic market in 2022. In Europe, Germany is the largest market for organic products as well as the largest organic producer. In addition, veganism is increasingly popular in Germany creating export opportunities for meat and dairy substitutes as well as breakfast foods.

A high-level business Delegation from the Sverdlovsk Regional Government of Russian Federation visited Sri Lanka for a three-day programme from 23rd to 26th January 2023. Mr. Vladimir Smirnov, Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Sverdlovsk Region led the Business delegation which included prominent business leaders from the Region.

This was mainly due to the decrease in export earnings from Apparel & Textiles, Tea, Rubber based Products, and Coconut based Products, Food & Beverages, Spices & Essential Oils and Fisheries products.
Sri Lanka Export Development Board presents its flagship statistical publication “Export Performance Indicators 2021”. The latest edition provides statistical information related to Sri Lanka’s external trade and its contribution to major economic indicators such as trade balance, GDP and individual sectoral involvement for the year 2021 and five preceding years.
The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) ceremoniously launched Ceylon Cinnamon Geographical Indication (GI) Control Plan Guidance books at Ramada Hotel on 8th December. The financial assistance for the publication was provided by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the European Union (EU).

This was mainly due to the decrease in export earnings from Apparel & Textiles, Tea, Rubber based Products, Coconut based Products, Spices & Essential Oils and Fisheries sector. Further, the impact of global crisis also affecting to decrease export earnings of major products.
Sri Lanka Export Development Board (SLEDB) in collaboration with the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Paris successfully organized Sri Lanka participation at the SIAL Paris – 2022 exhibition held from 15th to 19th October 2022 in Parc Des Expositions- Paris Nord Villepinte in Paris.
