Personal Protective Equipment from Sri Lanka

As the world battles to slow the spread of new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic across the world, Sri Lankan manufacturers and suppliers of medical personal protective equipment (PPEs) have risen up to the challenge of providing frontline workers engaged with battling the pandemic with the right safety equipment.

While Sri Lanka had an active personal protective equipment manufacturing industry, governed mainly by global players, who manufactured PPEs for medical, chemical, electrical, electronic and construction industries, the country’s manufacturing capacity has been bolstered by the participation of leading players in apparel and rubber industries.

Today, Sri Lanka’s leading textile manufacturers, rubber safety and medical glove manufacturers, as well as personal care and pharmaceutical product manufacturers, have come together to breathe life to an industry that provides the world with essential PPEs and safety accessories includin

• Face masks and respirators including reusable face masks, 3-ply surgical masks, N-95 respirators, KN95 face masks, and washable and reusable cloth face masks.
• Hand gloves including safety gloves, medical gloves, and specialised surgical gloves
• Personal protective clothing including PPE gowns, aprons, coveralls, protective hoods, and safety boots
• Hand sanitizers and antiseptics
• Hand sanitizer dispensers with manual or automatic, touchless function

The protective equipment made in Sri Lanka consists of garments placed to protect the health care workers or any other persons who run the risk of getting infected, disinfectant agents and dispensers.

As per the World Health Organisation (WHO) this equipment usually consists of standard precautions: gloves, mask, gown. face protection, goggles and mask or face shield, gloves, gown or coverall, head cover, and rubber boots.

While fast adapting to new manufacturing regulations in specialised, highly hygienic, limited production lines to meet the local and global PPE demand, PPE manufacturers in Sri Lanka are collaborating with the Health Ministry of Sri Lanka, Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) in the research and development of disposable and reusable protective equipment for medical professionals, frontline workers and the general public.
