    Engineering work in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan engineers have been able to accomplish a lot in the creation of machines and machine parts. The talent pool involved in machine-making is inspired by innovative ideas. Although these creative folk do not work under one roof, they work their magic for various sectors and industries.

While a lot of Sri Lankan inventors create new machines to serve various purposes, most local companies have been manufacturing better versions of existing machines and models that are highly demanded in the global market.

    Industrial machinery

The machinery and equipment used by manufacturers in a factory facility are known as industrial machinery. Each machine falling under this category serves a unique purpose and supports a production process. Sometimes the same machine can be used in a few industries that share a common step in their lines of work.

    The Milling Machine

The milling machine is one of the most versatile machines out there. Their most common purpose is to mill flat surfaces. It can also be used to drill, bore, cut gears, and produce slots. It rotates a circular tool with several cutting edges that are arranged symmetrically.

A table that is driven either manually or by power against the rotating cutter is where the workpiece is placed during the milling operation. Milling machines are available in a range of common designs that include standard-knee and column machines, horizontal machines, vertical machines, and bed-type machines.

    The Planer Machine

Planer machines are used to produce flat surfaces and cutting slots. Even though it is similar to a shaper machine, it is larger. This machine consists of a cross rail, tool head, table, bed, and column. The two main operations performed by a trailer machine are the vertical flat operation and the horizontal flat operation.

When the vertical flat operation is performed, the workpiece is planned by adjusting the saddle along the cross rail until the tool is in a position to give the required depth of cut. The workpiece is given reciprocating movement along with the table while the tool is fed crosswise when performing the horizontal flat operation.

    Machines for Domestic Use

Without limiting themselves to industrial purposes, machines started to do their job at various other places including houses. Various machines were built to fulfil domestic needs and wants. These machines take part in almost everything we do once we wake up in the morning. Improved versions are also introduced more often by their creators.

    The Refrigerator

As a commonly known home appliance, the refrigerator does a great service to almost every house by keeping food and beverages cool. How is this done? A liquid refrigerant is pushed through a sealed system causing it to vaporize, and draw heat out of the fridge. The vaporized refrigerant is then passed through coils outside the fridge. It warms up the vapour and changes back into a liquid.

There are different types of refrigerators in the market. Top freezer, Bottom freezer, Freezerless, French door, and Wine fridge are some of those famous varieties. Apart from its basic mechanism, the modern-day refrigerator comes with a lot of features. Some of these features include the water and ice dispenser, blast chillers, hot water dispenser, and LED lighting.

    The Washing Machine

The washing machine was invented with the motive of taking away the physical efforts involved in washing clothes. It takes away the need to rub clothes with the hands or squeeze the water out of them. It is as simple as putting the clothes inside the machine and selecting the required mode.

The common structure of a washing machine includes an inner drum, paddles, agitator, the outer drum, thermostat and heating element, the pump, pipes and valves, and the programmer. The inner drum is where the clothes are put for washing. Paddles are the ridges lying at the end of the drum. They help the clothes to move around while being washed. The agitator helps clothes to move around when the water gets soapy.

The outer drum makes sure that the water does not leak and damage any sensitive parts of the machine. This process continues while the thermostat and heating element controls the temperature of the water. The pump removes the water from the drum once the washing is done. The water flows out of the pipes and valves. All the steps followed by the machine are controlled by the programmer from washing to rinsing and spin-drying.

    The Electric Fan

The use of electric fans has become a necessity for most individuals once their bodies get used to its moving air. The moving air creates a breeze that cools the skin. Electric fans work with the help of a motor run by an electric current. This motor is attached to the fan blades through a shaft. The motor works according to the speed set by the user. The number of blades in the fan might vary based on the model.

Ceiling fans and pedestal fans, and table fans are the three types of fans present in most households. Ceiling fans are known for providing cool comfort for a room while providing versatile style as it hangs from the ceiling. Pedestal fans are portable and easy to control.

They are capable of delivering a personalized cooling experience to the user. Table fans are most known for ensuring air circulation at a balanced room temperature. It is less expensive than most fan models and its portability provides the user with more convenience.

    Textile Processing Machinery

In the production of textiles, specially designed machinery takes part in the fabrication and processing of fabrics, and other woven and non-woven materials. Most of them are known for performing the functions of spinning, weaving, warping, and dyeing. The motive of any textile manufacturer is to supply the best product to the market. Therefore, it is important to have the right equipment to get the job done.

    Knitting Machine

A knitting machine is used to create knitted fabrics in a semi or fully automated fashion. Some knitting machines are operated by hand while some are power-driven. The purpose of the machine is to speed up the job done using a needle and a thread. Some of the modern knitting machines have 100 feeders. This means that each needle picks up 100 threads per revolution.

The yarn is passed through a knit carriage, where it is fed to the needles as they knit. The tension mast, metal needle bed with gate posts, knit carriage, and row counter are some of the most important parts of a knitting machine. Other specialized tools also participate in the process by helping with factors such as needle selection, cast on and cast off, stitch transfer, yarn conditioning, and stitch formation.

    Fabric Cutting Machine

Simply designed to save the time spent on managing fabrics, the fabric cutting machine helps to fasten up textile processing. It is capable of making clean, precise cuts safely, without fraying the fabric. Using a fabric cutting machine is one of the best ways to ensure that each fabric is ready to meet exact designs and specifications.

It shapes the fabric from straight continuous cuts to curved, intricate cuts. Based on the shape of its blade, fabric cutters are available in two main models. They are the circular blade fabric cutter and the straight blade fabric cutter.

    Tea Processing Machinery

Tea holds a special place in the beverage industry. The quality factor of Ceylon Tea is determined by the weather conditions, cultivation methods, and the process that the tea leaves go through until they are packed and ready to meet their consumers.

The tea processing methods have developed over the years to meet its goals. The use of special machinery is one of the ways that these methods have improved. Each machine has its role in tea processing.

    Tea Withering Machine

When the fresh tea leaves are left to dry, it is known as withering. Various techniques of withering have been followed by tea producers for some time. The withering machine is one of the successful machines that have been introduced to perform this task. This machine consists of a frame, a heat supply system, and a set of fans.

The heat supply system is built using a hot air duct fixed axially in the cavity of the drum. The wall of the hot air duct is provided with air outlet holes while the wall of the cavity drum is provided with inclined stagger-distributed screw conveyance pieces and several axial distributed tea-turning plates.

    The Tea Fermentation Machine

Fermentation alters the chemistry of the tea leaves. It affects the smell of the tea and its organoleptic qualities. Fermentation reduces the astringency and bitterness of the tea, improving its mouthfeel and aftertaste. The fermentation machine is designed to automatically and precisely control the temperature, and humidity during this process.

It provides the tea with the most suitable environmental conditions to avoid the problems of insufficient fermentation or excessive fermentation. The machine is designed to further stabilize, unify, and upgrade the quality of tea while making the process faster.

    Agricultural Machinery

The machinery and equipment used in farming are known as agricultural machinery. Many machines have been designed to help farmers who seek faster solutions and look forward to stepping away from traditional methods.

Agricultural machinery serves both organic and non-organic farming practices. Farming was an area of work inspired by the industrial revolution. Therefore, many solutions have been found during the years to serve various farming activities.

    The Baler

A baler is a farming machine that is used to chop or compress hay or straw into bales. The machine cuts and crimps the forage and discharges it through a wide window. Balers are available in different types such as round balers, rectangular balers, square balers, and industrial balers. Round balers are the most common type of balers used for large-scale farming operations.

The compressed material produced by this baler comes out in the form of a cylinder. Rectangular balers weigh more than round balers. Their production is secured with twine or mesh that is usually knotted. Square balers do not carry much of a difference when compared to the round baler and the rectangular baler. They are smaller in size and preferred for small-scale use.

    The Tractor

Sri Lankan manufacturers assemble tractors that are used for a variety of farming activities such as ploughing, planting, cultivation, fertilizing, and harvesting. The tractor engine is considered a prime mover for active tools. The main three types of tractors that participate in agricultural activities are the wheel tractor, crawler tractor, and walking tractor.

The modern-day tractor comprises an I.C engine, clutch, transmission gears, front wheels, rear wheels, hydraulic control and hitch system, power take-off unit, brakes, tractor pulley, and a control panel.
