Sri Lanka has earned its reputation as the "Gem Island" through centuries of producing some of the world's finest stones, including the legendary Ceylon sapphires, rare padparadscha sapphires, and exceptional cat's eye chrysoberyl. However, with the complexities of the global gem market and the existence of treatments and synthetics, verifying the authenticity of Sri Lankan gems has become increasingly important for buyers and collectors worldwide.
The most reliable method for verifying gem authenticity is through professional gemmological laboratory testing. Sri Lanka hosts many certified gem testing laboratories equipped with both basic and advanced analytical instruments. These laboratories employ qualified gemmologists who hold internationally recognised credentials, including Graduate Gemmologist (GG) certifications from the Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) and Fellowship of the Gemmological Association (FGA) qualifications from Great Britain.
Legitimate gemmological certificates contain several security features that help verify their authenticity. Reputable laboratories use watermarked paper, official seals, and unique numbering systems to provide gem certification in Sri Lanka.
Certificates should include the certifying gemmologist’s name and qualifications, which can often be independently verified. Genuine gemmological reports note inclusions, treatments, and any limitations in the assessment. A proper certificate should include detailed information such as gem species and variety, weight and measurements, colour description, clarity assessment, cut evaluation, any detected treatments, and often the country of origin.
Gem dealers in Sri Lanka are typically registered with the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) and hold valid dealer license. They should be willing to answer questions, provide documentation of the stone's provenance, explain any treatments applied, and arrange for independent laboratory certification. The NGJA maintains a registry of licensed dealers, and buyers can verify a dealer's registration status.
