The National Packaging Centre (NPC) of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) recently conducted an awareness workshop on “Packaging strategies for Spices” for exporters and potential exporters, with the aim of enhancing their knowledge on packaging solutions that meet both local and international market standards. Over 65 exporters and potential exporters participated in the workshop held on 19th 2026 at EDB.
The NPC, established under the EDB, serves as a national platform for the promotion and development of the packaging industry in Sri Lanka. It supports a diverse group of stakeholders including exporters, manufacturers, designers, SMEs, women entrepreneurs, academics, and research institutions by fostering collaboration with government agencies and industry partners. The NPC plays a pivotal role in strengthening the packaging sector and supporting the sustainable growth of agricultural exports.
The awareness session was specifically designed to educate participants on the critical aspects of packaging of spices. The key objective was to raise awareness on best practices in packaging of spices, thereby improving product competitiveness in both local and global markets.
The resource panel featured Mr. W. Abhaya Senavirathna, an experienced Packaging Consultant, and Mr. Sanath Wanigasekara, Manager - CMC Engineering (Pvt) Ltd, who delivered a series of insightful presentations. Their sessions covered key areas such as the importance and functions of packaging, packaging techniques for spices, material selection for spices packaging as well as a practical overview of packaging machinery used in the food industry, providing participants with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on exposure.
Participants gained valuable insights into the selection of appropriate packaging methods and materials to maintain product quality, minimize waste, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
The EDB, through the National Packaging Centre, remains committed to empowering Sri Lankan exporters by promoting innovative and sustainable packaging practices that add value to their products and improve export readiness.
