2025-09-10

Sri Lanka’s ambition to position itself as a global hub for trusted organic products was further strengthened by successfully conducting its fourth phase of island-wide awareness campaign in Anuradhapura by the National Organic Control Unit (NOCU) of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board on the 29th of August 2025 at Hotel White House, Anuradhapura. The one-day seminar attracted farmers, entrepreneurs, exporters, and stakeholders from North Central Province who gathered to deepen their understanding of organic agriculture and explore new opportunities in this fast-growing sector.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Ms. Manori Kulasekara, Deputy Director - EDB North Western Province Office, who emphasized the region’s untapped potential in contributing to the organic economy. Ms. Vinoka Perera, Assistant Director - EDB, explained the pivotal role of NOCU in building a credible organic value chain for Sri Lanka. She also outlined the Sri Lankan Organic Standard (SLS 1324:2018), which forms the foundation for the country’s certification process and underpins the integrity of the Sri Lankan Organic Label - a mark of trust that assures consumers worldwide of the authenticity of Sri Lankan organic products.

Meanwhile, the technical sessions offered participants a rich blend of practical and policy-level knowledge. Mr. Chandika Jayashan of Mayacert (Pvt) Ltd. outlined the international organic certification procedure, giving participants clear insights into compliance and accreditation required to compete globally. Dr. Priyanga Dissanayaka of the Department of Agriculture expanded on the principles of organic agriculture and farming practices, highlighting sustainable and eco-friendly techniques that align with global organic standards.

Recognizing the increasing role of technology in today’s business environment, Mr. Dinidu Wathulanda and Mr. Udesh Dikkumbura of Commercial Bank shared strategies on digital marketing, equipping participants with tools to reach wider consumer bases and promote organic products effectively in both local and international markets. The afternoon sessions continued with Mr. Lasith Jayawardana, Export Promotion Officer - EDB, who explained organic food processing methods that add value and ensure quality, while Ms. Madhurika Manikpura, Assistant Director - EDB, spoke on market potential and export trends, drawing attention to Sri Lanka’s unique opportunity to supply certified organic produce to high-value niche markets.

The Anuradhapura programme reinforced the importance of credible certification, sustainable farming practices, and innovative marketing in building the future of Sri Lanka’s organic agriculture sector. By raising awareness, strengthening certification systems, and promoting the Sri Lankan Organic Label, NOCU continues to pave the way for positioning the country as a reliable and competitive supplier of organic produce in the global marketplace.
