Ceylon Cinnamon Geographical Indication

Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum Zeylanicum) was recognized as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in the EU 02^nd February, 2022.

The product characteristics and production methods mentioned in the GI speciﬁcation document submitted to the EU commission along with the GI application need to be implemented and assured by the stakeholders in the Cinnamon industry/members of the Association of Ceylon Cinnamon Protected Geographical Indication (ACCPGI) to use the PGI mark on their ‘Ceylon Cinnamon” products; Cinnamon quills, Cinnamon powder, Cinnamon leaf oil and Cinnamon bark oil.

The EDB is empowered to issue license for Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) Mark pursuant to the implementing regulation - (EU) 2022/144 by entering the name ‘Ceylon Cinnamon’ in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications by the EU commission. Accordingly, the EDB to hold the ownership/ custodianship as the approval granted by the cabinet of Ministers of the name “Ceylon Cinnamon” on behalf of the people of Sri Lanka.

The ‘PGI Mark” can be used only for Ceylon Cinnamon Packs including Cinnamon cut quills, Cinnamon powder and Cinnamon leaf oil & Bark oil containing 100% Pure Ceylon Cinnamon grown, processed and manufactured in Sri Lanka. In order to use the PGI mark, should be a member of the Association for Ceylon Cinnamon Protected Geographical Indication (ACCPGI). (grower /processor/ manufacturer or exporter).
